I just happened to type in "Mansfield colliery' on "google' & found a wonderful display of old colliery railway photographs that reminded me so much of the 20 years I lived in Rainworth .
As kids we used to play on the railway embankment & watch the trains pass under the Helmsley road bridge.
I lived for 18 years on Southwell Rd & our garden backed up to the railway embankment --which was a great place for kids to play & put pennies on the line for the engine to squash??
I was an electrician at Rufford Colliery from 1947 to 1956 & emigrated to Canada in 1957--&--then to California in 1959.
I am now retired & living in Phoenix Arizona.
Really enjoyed reliving my youth looking at these photos. Ken Moore

Hi,

Got a 1968 timetable out last night for the Rufford / Clipstone branch,

It appears there were about 4 trains in / out of each but what I couldn’t get my head around was the way that some worked a train down to Mansfield Colliery Sdgs. Other’s went EBV to Clipstone etc, or EBV to Mansfield to pick a train that worked as far as Mansfield Colliery Sdgs, by another train etc,

Some however where direct to Toton or in one case to Lloyds,

After looking at the pic of the Peak at Rufford I noticed this on the DerbySulzers website.

44010 was noted at Derby late in January 1975. It was stored at Toton during February 1976 then withdrawn in August only to be re-instated in October after 44001 succumbed to fire damage at that time. 44010's reprieve ended on May 12th 1977 when it suffered main generator damage working a Rufford Colliery - Avenue Coking Plant freight near Mansfield Colliery Jct. It was withdrawn the same month, moved to Derby Works by the middle of June, spending several months sitting on the Work's reception siding. By the end of October 44010 had been broken up at Derby.

The traffic I seen from Clipstone was Hasland wagons MCO,MCV,MXV,HTO,HTV and Southam which was minfits MCV,MXV I did hear that the Southam traffic was all MXV,a mxv was a minfit but with 4 shoe brakes Morton 4 ton brake force loaded and empty,a MCV was 8 shoe clasp braked 11 ton brake force loaded and 4 ton empty.

That may well have been Alan Morton. As far as I know, he still lives on Rannoch Drive in Mansfield, but I don't know what number.

At last, I've been searching for pictures of the Rufford Branch for years, for modelling purposes, I used to trainspot all around that area as a kid, but didnt think on to take pictures, The guy that used to run the Model shop on Bridge st told me he walked the Branch taking pictures before it was lifted. But the shop closed down and I've no idea what happened to him, which is a damn shame, Anyhow I'll keep checking the site for any updates, p.s theres a good photo of a pair of 20's passing mansfield sand quarry in the Book, Double Headed Diesels Nationwide...
